The Benefits of Geothermal

The Benefits of Geothermal

As the world population increases, so does the amount of energy we use, pushing us to find alternative sustainable and economical energy sources. Renewable energy – sometimes known as clean energy – comes from natural sources that are constantly being replenished. If you’ve ever visited a hot spring, you have experienced one of the Earth’s most fascinating sources of clean energy called geothermal energy.

Geothermal energy is heat derived within the sub-surface of the Earth. Water and or steam carry the geothermal energy to the Earth’s surface. One of the most beneficial factors of geothermal energy is that since it utilizes the flow of heat, it doesn’t need fuel. The heat is continually replaced by the Earth as the water that is removed is put right back into the ground after its heat is used.

Geothermal is more reliable than other renewable energy since the energy that exists in the Earth is not dependent on weather or other factors, like solar, hydro, and wind energy are. Every square meter of land has some heat running through it that can provide energy in lieu of fossil fuels.

Using geothermal energy instead of electrical energy reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90%. Greenhouse gas emissions can cause climate change by trapping heat. Greenhouse gases are also believed to cause respiratory disease from unnecessary smog and pollution. The benefits of utilizing cleaner energy to decrease outdoor air pollution and slow global climate change are a benefit to all.

Geothermal energy has been proven to be cheaper to produce than any other type of renewable energy, with wind energy in a close second. Because the energy is generated right near the plant, it saves on processing and transportation costs compared to other types of fuel. A clean combination of geothermal, wind, solar, biomass, and hydrodynamic energy could power the world and reduce our independence on foreign oil.

Finding sustainable ways to live a comfortable life for a long time to come is essential to our existence on this planet. Not only is geothermal energy good for your wallet, but it’s good for the planet and good for you!
